Recently elected officials have asked the U.S. Coast Guard to put a hold on plans for more barges in the Hudson River.

According to theexaminernews.com., Westchester County Executive, Rob Astorino along with other state officials have officially asked the United States Coast Guard to withdraw their plan for 43 new barge anchorages claiming it's counterproductive to the environment of the Hudson River. County officials point to a study by the Pace Environmental Policy Clinic made up of students and led by Pace Professor John Cronin.

Professor Cronin told The Examiner that the Coast Guard has been running a covert process in plain sight. The students who compiled the study contend the Coast Guard failed to conduct two important studies centered around river hazards and impact. They also called out the Coast Guard for not holding public discussions with mariners and for not seeking out feedback from environmental groups.

The Maritime Association for the Port NY/NJ supports the Coast Guard saying the anchorages would provide the infrastructure which is vital to the safe and efficient transport of goods and people on the Hudson River.
