A K-9 fresh from training and put into immediate use helped rescue a hiker who was lost in Patterson.

On Tuesday just before 9PM, Police received a 911 report of a female hiker lost in a wooded area of the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area in the Town of Patterson. The 59-year-old called 911 from a cell phone after realizing she was lost.

Chase, a K-9 from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, along with his handler, Criminal Investigator Randel Hill, located the hiker’s vehicle on Stage Coach Road.

Chase was able to pick up the lost hikers scent from her vehicle and began to track her.

Despite rain, darkness, and an errant black bear, after a 1.13 mile track through the woods, Chase led his handler and New York State Troopers to the lost woman.

The woman was brought back to her car with no reported injuries.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Chase is an 18-month-old Bloodhound who recently completed his training and was immediately put to use. This was his first official track.
