Imagine you're driving home from work, looking forward to a relaxing evening with the family but your road is closed! Closed, as in gate and padlock closed and you don't have a key.

A bitter legal battle has been brewing in the Candlewood Hills community of New Fairfield, CT. The residents of the locked up Squantz View Drive recently won a five year legal fight to secede from the Candlewood Hills Tax District. Some of the residents who live in Candlewood Hills say that their neighbors don't pay their taxes to the district to maintain their roads. Two previous attempts to obtain an emergency court ruling have failed without explanation. A pregnant woman, an older couple in their 80's, and a man with a serious blood condition are literally barricaded by the padlocked gate.

Attorney Adam Cohen, who represents the residents on Squantz View Drive says that the locked gate is "vindictive" and "reckless." The only way in or out for these residents is a private narrow dirt road through the less exclusive Candlelands Community. Currently access up that dirt road for larger vehicles such as fuel oil  and fire trucks is tenuous at best.  Attorney Cohen said he believes this legal battle will have to be decided by a jury.
