"We were at a reception after a dance performance when all of a sudden my phone just starting going crazy," Liza Janssen Petra told NBC Connecticut, "I was getting messages with everything from are you safe to where are you to what's going on!" The Paris attacks were only a few miles away from where Janssen Petra and her mother were watching a modern dance performance. When they were led out of a basement exit, they felt something was just not right, but they didn't actually see what happened until they were back at their hotel.

She also told NBC Connecticut that after the attacks "everything seemed so surreal and sad." She went on to say that some parts of Paris were, "like a ghost town except for police and tourists." Here is a video of a guy who actually witnessed the attacks and only survived because people were lying on top of him.

She took photos of armed guards as everything began to unfold during her stay. She said the trip to France "was sobering" and was thankful that they weren't hurt in the attacks. "We all just snuggled last night and it felt good," Janssen Petra said, and added, "It was just a reminder that you never know."
