It was the year 1967 when Richard Nixon announced he was making a run at the Presidency in 1968.

1968 was a year of turmoil. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated and there was constant protesting because of our involvement in the Vietnam War. The 1968 Democratic National Convention was marred by 10,000 anti-war protesters, which turned out to be disastrous for the Democratic Party.

Republican, Richard M. Nixon, was elected President in 1968 and was re-elected in 1973. He resigned his Presidency on August 9, 1974 due to the Watergate Scandal. There was lots of other stuff that happened too, but I don't have time to do a class on American history.

My partner in our folk-rock group, Sunup, wrote a song in 1973 about Nixon called, "Open Up." Every time we played the song at a gig, everyone would sing along to the chorus. Here's our contribution to the state-of-the-nation back in '73.

"Open Up" is one of the 11 tracks on our album titled, Passion & Politics, which are remastered Sunup tunes recorded between 1973 and 1975, and will be available on iTunes in December or January. Dig it!
