ALS is the abbreviation for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." This nasty disease affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons do all the work traveling from the brain to the spinal chord to the muscles, but as the motor neurons gradually die with ALS, the ability of the brain to control muscle movement is lost. There is no cure.The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a tool to boost awareness of this hideous disease. The rules state that if you've been challenged, your choices are having a bucket of ice water dumped on your head to help raise awareness or, if you find that unappealing, you're encouraged to write a $100 check to the ALS Foundation (www.alsa.org) The accompanying video says it all..............
