It's 2017 and still we struggle on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled this new measure was given approval, what galls me is that we even have the need to have a measure at all.

What am I talking about? A story from courant.com reveals that the Connecticut state House is giving its approval to a compromise pay equity bill. Accordingly, the measure looks to make sure that men and women are paid equally for performing the same work.

Did you just do a double take? After all it's been illegal under federal law, since 1963, for men and women to be paid differently for equal work. Truth is though that we all know inequity is there, even lawmakers say it still happens.

Connecticut Rep. Robyn Porter ( D ) who co-chairs the labor committee told the Hartford Courant

It's hard to enforce, and that's the purpose of this bill - to actually strengthen what's already on the books...We're pro-business. We're pro-people. ... I don't think we should be discriminated against on the basis of sex. Women consider equal pay a top workplace issue

As I read the article I realized that there are so many layers to the issue, and so many ways for legislation to get bogged down over and over again. What would seem logical to most of us, and women in particular, is that equal pay for equal work should have been a non - issue since, at the very least, 1963 when the federal law was passed. And yet, here we still are.

This new bill now moves on to the Senate for approval.
