Meat producers are pissed and vegetarians are yelling, "I told you so!!" According to an article in the News-Times, The World Health Organization(WHO) analyzed decades of research and their findings show that processed meats are in the same danger category as smoking and asbestos. That's not to say that eating sausages or spam or hot dogs are as bad as smoking cigarettes. The connection between the two are the carcinogens. The World Health Organization tells us that processed meats such as salami and sausage "are carcinogenic to humans."

Fact; Cured meats include some nasty chemicals. Do you eat a lot of hot dogs, kielbasa, or salami on a semi-regular basis? If you do, you're at a greater risk of developing colon and stomach cancer. If you enjoy pepperoni only once in awhile, the risk is small.

The International Agency for Research(IARC) evaluated over 800 studies from all over the world about the effects of meat and cancer. Based on their analysis, the IARC classified processed meats as "carcinogenic to humans." They went on to say that red meat contained valuable nutrients but was, "probably carcinogenic" with links to colon, prostate, and pancreatic cancers.

After the WHO report came out, CNN asked the question, "What in the world is there left to eat that's healthy?" Doctors say that's an easy one, it's the Mediterranean Dietwhich is heavy on veggies, nuts, and fruits with limits on meat and dairy. Many studies have shown it helps you live longer and lowers your risk of cancer.
