The woman who's made headlines around the world for planning to marry her biological father is from right here in our own backyard.

The story of Steven Pladl and Katie Pladl's twisted romance has been trending since yesterday. The cringe-worthy couple were arrested in North Carolina for incest after announcing they were pregnant and planning on getting married, despite it being against the law.

Sordid details about the father and daughter's relationship have been plastered all over the media, but one of the most shocking facts for people here in our local area was buried way below the headlines on Monday.

Katie Pladl was put up for adoption as a child, and only reconnected with her biological father through social media after she turned 18. An old blog post written by Katie was uncovered by Heavy.com. It shows the then-16-year-old was attending high school in Dover Plains and would be attending Dutchess Community College in the fall. Yes, Katie grew up as one of our neighbors right here in the Hudson Valley. Her plan was to eventually pursue a degree in digital advertising at SUNY Purchase after taking classes at DCC.

Things didn't work out as planned. Just two years later Katie reconnected with her biological parents online and moved from Dover Plains to North Carolina to live with them. That's where she says she fell in love with her dad. After Katie's parents divorced she announced on Instagram that she was pregnant and planned to marry her biological father.

Both Katie and Steven Pladl are charged with incest and contributing to delinquency. Their bail has been set at $1 million.
