A doctor who was once thought of as the best in the area settled a malpractice suit after a 7-year court battle.

Dr. Spyros Panos, 49, just settled his 7-year malpractice suit for $45 million, according to the NY Daily News. 260 patients were involved in the suit. Panos was just released from federal prison in March 2017. His malpractice was from 2006-2011.

Panos was accused of performing unnecessary surgeries on healthy patients, not doing the surgery that was promised, and completely botching some operations. The payouts for the patients in the suit will be determined by a point system considering different factors. Each point is worth $2,500, according to the article.

When Panos was a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he would perform 20 or more surgeries a day, to increase profits from health care insurance companies. He went to prison for less than 3 years of his 4.5-year sentence for felony health care fraud, according to the Daily News. A U.S. attorney said his fraud was extensive, and cost millions of dollars for private, state, and federal health insurance.
