Pack up the wife and kids, we're goin' to the Drive-in movies!

On June 6, 1933, Richard Hollingshead opened up the first Drive-in Theatre in Camden, New Jersey. According to newyorkdriveins.com, there were almost 100 drive-ins scattered across the country in 1942, and by 1958, there were 4,063 drive-in theaters throughout North America. In the 70s and 80s, the drive-in dark days began, and by 1990, there were only 910 left. But, there has been a resurgence over the last 20 years, and the Hudson Valley Region is proud to offer four to choose from.

1. The Hyde Park Drive-in - Located at 4114 Albany Post Road (Rt.9) in Dutchess county, the Hyde Park Drive-in is opposite the FDR mansion. The ticket booth opens one hour before start time and the snack bar is stocked with just about everything from Sabrett hot dogs, burgers, pizza, nachos, fried dough, and flavored ice slushies. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for kids.

3. Fair Oaks Drive-in - Located in Orange County off Exit 118 of Rt. 17, Fair Oaks re-opened at the beginning of the 2015 season after being dark for many years. They should be opening very soon and feature two screens and an 800 car capacity. Call 845-361-5474 for movies and start times.

4. Overlook Drive-in - Located in Dutchess County, the 'Overlook' is located at 126 Degarmo Road at Overlook Rd. in Poughkeepsie and is one of the most impressive drive-in movie theaters in the state. The Overlook has the largest movie screen of any New York metropolitan outdoor theater and has remained active since 1949. They're opened from mid April through mid October every night of the week. The ticket booth is cash only  but the snack bar accepts credit cards. Call 845-452-3445 for more info and make sure to arrive early. One more thing, treat yourself to a char broiled Black Angus burger served on a crispy Kaiser roll. You're welcome!
