The Danbury Whalers have led the Federal Hockey League in attendance for five years straight under the leadership of Whalers CEO, Herm Sorcher, but now it appears their future in the league is up in the air according to the News-Times. The obstacle is the Whalers lease at the Danbury Ice Arena. Sorcher and the Vice President of Arena Operations, Kevin McCormack, seem to be divided on the basics of the lease. Sorcher believes that the lease was for 10 years. McCormack says that the lease was for 5 years with an option to renew for another 5 years, which means that either party could back out after this season.

Sorcher says that the Whalers are in it for 10 years but McCormack would not comment on where they stood regarding the the option for the next 5 years. Danbury Mayor, Mark Boughton, hopes that the two parties can come to an agreement adding that this is an exclusive agreement between two private parties, meaning the city cannot get involved. Civic leaders agreed that the city would take a big hit economically if the Danbury Whalers closed up shop. Mayor Mark said that the Whalers are almost up to date with their payments to the police and fire departments staffing at games. The Whalers led the league in attendance with an average of 1,647 fans per game. Thanks to the News-Times
