This happened in Danbury the day after I wrote about new fines imposed in Connecticut on top of criminal charges for hitting pedestrians and cyclists. The string of expletives rolling off my tongue would make a sailor blush.

My god people, will you never learn? Two days ago I shared with you the story of both my husband and a friend of his being hit by cars while they were cycling.

That went hand in hand with a story reported by CTPost.com, about a new bill in Connecticut that would raise the current fine to $500 for drivers who hit pedestrians and bicyclists while within crosswalks. The fines would be in addition to criminal charges under a bill that won final, unanimous approval in the Senate.

The very next day, in a story covered by the NewsTimes.com , a cyclist was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a car on Main Street in Danbury. I have no idea whether it occurred in a crosswalk or not. The legislation that was approved in Connecticut applies to drivers and crosswalks only. Any measure is certainly a good one, but how many times does this need to happen before people become more aware of their surroundings? And, I will add, that cyclists and pedestrians need to be alert as well. But when you are behind the wheel of a car you have to be cognoscente to the severe damage you can do.
