As we ramp up to Halloween, I'll be featuring some of the spookiest songs I know. There are tons of well-known (and not-so-well-known) songs about ghosts, zombies, werewolves, witches and more, and I'll be sharing some of my favorites right here.

Black Sabbath's first album scared the crap out of me when I was a little kid. The album cover, with that green-tinted witch staring at you in the ruined garden... still gives me the creeps.  And the song that kicks it off, "Black Sabbath," truly announced the band as a force to be reckoned with. After some thunderstorm sound effects and bells, the riff that starts the song is so evil, my dog runs away when I play it on guitar. (My dog runs away when I play most things on guitar, but that's a story for another day.) And Ozzy's vocals, recorded when he was just 21, sound like a world-weary old man.

Here's a cool version as well. The band re-recorded the song for a promotional video. Guitarist Tony Iommi looks pretty... ummm... intense here.

Pleasant dreams! Next time, we'll go from Black to Blue with a creepy nugget from Blue Oyster Cult.
