Governor Malloy Asks the New York Islanders to Move to Connecticut

The Hartford Courant reports today that Connecticut’s Governor Malloy and Mayor Bronin of Hartford reached out to management of the NHL's New York Islanders to see if they would be interested in playing here in Connecticut at the XL Center in Hartford.

Currently, the New York Islanders reside at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but according to Bloomberg News, the center will not be hosting the team next season, mainly because game attendance is not up to par.

The Governor and Mayor wrote to the team, stating that they are aware the team needs a home for the upcoming season. This may or may be a temporary or long term offer to the team, but I for one hope it happens and leads to a long term commitment.

For nearly 40 years, the Islanders used the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island as their home. As it’s being renovated, Newsday reported there was some talk of the team returning to the Long Island Coliseum.

The XL Center is also being renovated. We here in Connecticut haven't hosted a pro sports franchise since the Hartford Wailers relocated to North Carolina back in 1997.
