I've always been fascinated with tropical, desert, and exotic plants. It all started with the Venus Flytrap I bought for myself at the Tulsa State Fair in 1979. I spent hours watching that little plant react when I put an insect in the tiny gaping jaws. Cacti caught my attention soon afterwards. I was amazed that plants could evolve weaponry to defend itself against predators, thirsty birds, and those damn squirrels. Connecticut isn't much of a desert, so if you want a cactus around here, you have to purchase them.

As I was driving home the other day, the sign you see above caught my eye. Naugatuck Valley Community College hosts an annual Cactus and Succulent show! It's coming up Saturday, April 2, from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, April 3, from 10 AM to 4 PM in the East and West Cafe at NVCC. All sorts of exotic, prickly, living cacti will be on site for sale and viewing. It sounds like a fun little event to bring the curious horticulturist in your family to.
