The Bethel Fire Department had their work cut out for them as they battled a large brush fire on Tuesday.

According to the NewsTimes, the brush fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon on the Terre Haute land in Bethel which abuts Tarrywile Park in Danbury. Firefighters were able to take control of the fire as darkness began to fall but returned on Wednesday morning to take care of any hot spots that may have sparked up overnight.

Bethel Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Scott Murphy told the NewsTimes that his firefighters had to hike into some rough terrain:

Rocks were falling down onto the firefighters as they were trying to climb up to the fire. One large boulder I stepped on slipped right out from under me.

Bethel firefighters were joined by Danbury, Redding, Stevenson, Monroe, Shelton, and Trumbull fire departments. Bethel Fire Marshall, Tom Galliford said that even though camping is not allowed, the fire could have been ignited by an unattended campfire. At least five acres of land were burned before the firefighters were able to get the fire under control.
