Be On the Lookout for Blue-Green Algae On Candlewood Lake

New Fairfield Town Park was finally reopened on Sunday after being closed this past Thursday because of a bloom of blue-green algae.

According to articles in the NewsTimes and Danbury Patch, blue-green algae contains toxins that are harmful to the health of humans and animals. The good news? Test results taken on Saturday showed that this particular bloom of algae was well-below state guidelines. That doesn't necessarily mean you should be swimming all day in this stuff.

These type of algae blooms occur naturally in lakes and rivers due to a mix of elevated nutrients and favorable weather conditions that cause the water temperature to rise.

The Candlewood Lake Authority is asking lake goers to keep their eyes open for algae blooms and report them to the CLA. It looks like someone painted the water green. Ingestion of the blue-green algae could cause vomiting or diarrhea. It can also affect the liver and kidneys on a long-term basis.
