According to Newtown Police, a threatening call came through the switchboard at the new Sandy Hook Elementary School.

On August 15th, the Newtown Police were given the heads up that an individual had called the new Sandy Hook Elementary School regarding the first day of school. After learning that the date was August 29th, he allegedly made a threat against the school. At that point, School Resource Officer, William Chapman was brought in to investigate the phone call and says that he was able to trace the call to a Pierre Beauvil. An arrest warrant was issued, and Beauvil was rounded up and brought in on September 2nd. Other police agencies are investigating the possibility that Beauvil made threatening calls to other schools as well.

Beauvil was charged with Breach of Peace, Harassment in the 2nd Degree, and Threatening in the 1st Degree. His bond has been set at $150,000.

After checking several sources, I learned, through the website scientificamerican.com that individuals who suffer a severe mental illness like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and are not being treated with the appropriate medications, may be more prone to violence. The SA article also named drug abuse as a catalyst for violence and threatening violence in individuals.

Let me be clear, I am NOT suggesting mental illness be used as an excuse for the actions of individuals who threaten, harm, or murder people. The question, which I haven't an answer for, is how do we handle these types of individuals? Do we put them in prison for the rest of their lives? Do we get rid of them? Or do we obtain a psychiatric evaluation from a credible psychiatrist and then make a decision based on their expertise? What do you think?
